The Squirrel Nut Zippers continue to confound audiences with their hybrid stew of Southern roots music, New Orleans Jazz, Vaudeville, Blues and a healthy touch irreverence. In keeping with that time period, the band turned to their longtime friends at Fleischer Studios (home of Betty Boop) to use some of their historic animations for a video for the track. LOST SONGS OF DOC SOUCHON released in 2020 is a combination of newly written Zippers material, along with a few songs from past times like “Animule Ball” which was originally recorded in 1938 by Jelly Roll Morton. It wasn’t long before the band’s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of the region and attracted a national audience. Jimbo Mathus, along with drummer/percussionist Chris Phillips, formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the area. While there are infinitely other cities – perhaps on the west coast?! – that we’d love to live in and eventually settle down in, for now at least it’s a great city to spend a few years until M finishes grad school. The musical journey of the Squirrel Nut Zippers began in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990’s, as a musician’s escape from the cookie-cutter world of modern rock radio. So for now, I look at those last two years with the fondest of memories – and plans of experiencing the city as we once did, except on weekend trips.īut don’t fret! Boston is almost as good. Although that’s still VERY young, perhaps by then we would’ve missed our window of living in NYC (we ONLY want to live in Manhattan, not an adjacent, perhaps slower, borough). Perhaps we’ll be back again some day, perhaps not – the next time we’ll move we’ll be almost 30. Just when we got the hang of the city though, it was time to move on. New York City felt infinite and endless – there was almost too much going on at all times.
